Salome lives with her parents, 1 brother and 1 sister. Her parents struggle to provide for the family. Her father is self employed and her mother is unemployed. Despite their efforts, it is difficult to meet the family's needs.

Salome is growing up in northern Colombia, in a tropical, mixed urban-rural region. Most families make a living through agriculture of some kind, but their opportunities are limited by scarce clean water—1 in 5 people here don’t have access to water systems and many more lack waste management services. Twice as many families live in poverty in the rural areas compared to the cities, in part because they lack career and educational opportunities. Violence carried out by armed gangs is common, causing instability and sometimes forced displacement, as groups vie for territories and control. Without strong social services and educational systems, kids who face poverty are often recruited into the gangs with the promise of security. Domestic violence against women and children is also common, and weak family structures mean many kids don’t grow up with good role models.

Your sponsorship commitment will help Salome and her family have resources and support to build healthier communities and relationships. Working with government partners, we’ll help make sure families are equipped for risks like natural disasters so they can remain resilient. Kids and youth will learn about their rights to be protected from harm and abuse, and they’ll discover how to advocate for themselves in communal and political spaces. Young people will have access to practical life skills education, including peace-building tools.
